Sci-fi (Cont.)
The play takes place in the distant future. Earth’s human population has been wiped out by a biological virus, except for 56,000 people. These 56,000 people have been housed into buildings called complexes and are not allowed to venture outside. The complexes are overlooked by The Department, a sort of futuristic Big Brother. Things are going perfectly fine in this futuristic world until India, played by senior Sandra Mendoza, shows up from the past. She claims to have been transported to the complexes by a time machine that her father built. India is taken in by Echo, a futuristic soldier played by Sebastian Cisneros, and tries to find a way back home. In the end, it is revealed that this futuristic world was just a manifestation placed inside India’s head by a company (ChronoLogic) that rivaled her father’s time machine company (TimeTech). ChronoLogic fails to extract the time travel formula inside India’s brain, and ends up killing her. The play ends with a janitor cleaning up the mess of India’s dead body.
All of the twists and turns in the play make for a very enjoyable ride. Leader actor and actress Cisneros and Mendoza put on such a believable performance that I almost believed that I was sharing this futuristic world with them.
There was also this great dance number in the middle of the play that was both dark and sophisticated. This was performed by strutters Tatiana Nuval, Ruth Aranda, Dinorah Ledezma, and Alyssa Puente, who nailed every step.
All in all, Complexities was one heck of a show. Don’t be surprised if you see it on the big screen one day.
